San Jose Airport expecting 250,000 passengers Thanksgiving weekend

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The rush is on to get home for Thanksgiving.

Millions of people are hitting the road or taking flight to see their families.

Thanksgiving travel is off to a busy start, with airports nationwide expected to see record numbers.

According to AAA, nearly 80 million Americans are expected to hit the road or fly this week.

"It seems to be increasingly more busy, as you know, as we move past covid into like regular, normal routine and thanksgiving," Jim Whitaker traveling home to Las Vegas said.

At the San Jose Airport officials expect over 250,000 travelers this week.

The travel rush began back on Friday.

So far, San Jose Airport staff say they managed to avoid major delays.

"I think with the rainy weather and the thanksgiving holiday, it's been extra busy," Julie Jarratt, PIO at San Jose Mineta International Airport said. "But, at San Jose International Airport, because of our mild climate here in the south bay, we had minimal delays and cancellations."

Travelers are advised to arrive early, at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours for international flights especially during peak hours.

"Every day is going to feel a little bit busy," Jarratt said. "That's why we recommend that everyone does as much as you can from the comfort of your home to prepare for the crowds."

As far as those wanting to park at the airport during this Thanksgiving holiday airport officials recommend.

"You can pre-book your parking, it's usually cheaper," Jarratt said. "You can pre-book from home and you can also see real time data of how full each parking lot is. So you can choose your parking lot based upon which terminal you're flying from and just make it easy for yourself when you arrive."

It’s not just air travel that is seeing a spike this holiday season AAA reports that 71 million people traveling on Thanksgiving will choose other modes of travel.
