A new mobile voting solution is hitting the roads of San Benito County
SAN BENITO COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) — A new mobile voting solution is hitting the roads of San Benito County, aimed at assisting underserved voters with registering and casting their ballots.
This trailer is designed to provide voters access who may have trouble registering or getting to the poles.
In a groundbreaking move to enhance voter accessibility, San Benito County has introduced a mobile voting trailer to reach people where they live.
"We're going to be able to better serve the residents there located a little bit of a distance from hollister, It can take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes to drive here," Francisco Diaz county clerk recorder registrar of voters said.
This mobile voting initiative is already in operation for rural areas in San Benito County with the pilot phase planning to advance.
"Our intent is to be able to go out to the rural areas, the San Benito County," Diaz said. "A lot of people may not realize, but our county tends to extend pretty far out south."
To ensure the integrity and safety of the voting process, officials are implementing strict measures.
"We want to make sure is that the voters feel confident that whatever material gets released has to be checked back," Diaz said. "In addition, we also have various surveillance on the mobile trailer so that we can document both the materials equipment inside the the mobile trailer.
Community feedback has played a crucial role in shaping this initiative as residents express their desire for more accessible voting options.
"I think if you go out highway 25 you see a lot of ranch land and so those individuals I think would benefit them for voting being that it’s quite a ways away out there," Angel Vega San Benito County resident said.
Another key feature of the mobile voting trailer is to ensure that all voters can participate in the election process.
"One of the advantages of this mobile trailer as well is that we're also going to be offering capability for people with disabilities to be able to vote up to the mobile trailer," Diaz said.
Designing for the trailer is set to take place next year.
