Watsonville animal shelter closed temporarily due to animal illness; Santa Cruz County

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter announced that it will be temporarily shuttering its Watsonville location due to serious health concerns.

The animal shelter says that two highly contagious diseases were threatening the health of animals under their care, and that steps are currently being taken to prevent the spread to other animals.

Santa Cruz County says that the diseases were found in one stray puppy and two stray kittens over the past week.

According to the county, the shelter will be undergoing a thorough cleaning and is expected to be closed through at least Tuesday, October 28.

The Santa Cruz animal shelter location is remaining open.
