South Dakota removes 273 people from voter rolls due to human error by the state

South Dakota’s top elections official has removed 273 people from the state’s voter rolls as general election voting is underway. Her office later said the move rectified a paperwork error on the state’s behalf. Those people had inadvertently been registered to vote due to human error by state Department of Public Safety employees where the citizenship status was incorrectly marked, the state Division of Elections director said Wednesday. DPS on Monday had announced the removal of 273 “noncitizens” from the voter rolls. The action initially drew the ire of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota, which sent a letter with questions to the secretary of state’s office.
