Monterey Regional Airport installs voting exhibit ahead of election
MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) announced that its Art at the Airport program will feature a new student art exhibit in the airport's Youth Art Gallery titled "Your Vote is Your Voice."
The exhibit will feature art created by students to help encourage people to get out and vote ahead of this year's heated election. MRY says that the students who created the art participated in a contest hosted by the League of Women Voters of Monterey County, and that the contest--called Poster Art Contest-- challenged high school artists to inspire people to go out and vote.
“We were thrilled to receive outstanding entries sent to us by students independently as well as through art teachers," said Marianne Gawain, League of Women Voters. "Now we have a trove of resources to help us encourage voter participation."
The posters display a wide range of creativity, cultural diversity and artistic talent. The contest inspired discussions about the power of voting and students realized how art advocacy can have a positive impact on their community.
“So cool that the young artists focused on such an important issue and used their artistic talent to encourage folks to vote,” says Kathy Kopp, Youth Art Gallery Curator.
The exhibit will be available to view at the MRY terminal building until late November 2024.
