Police alert about nationwide bitcoin scam

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Scotts Valley Police Department announced Monday that they have received multiple cases involving bitcoin scams from unknown suspects emailing people and claiming they have compromising images or video of them.

According to the SVPD, the suspect then tries to extort bitcoin funds by threatening to share the images or videos with the potential victim's friends and family.

Police say that this is a new scam trending nationwide, and are urging people not to respond or send any type of funds to the scammer(s).

Police are encouraging the public to stay safe and follow tips from the FDIC about how to avoid scams like this.
