Power shutoffs underway in Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties
PG&E power shutoffs are underway in Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey Counties.
According to the outage map, the power is out at UC Santa Cruz and near Seacliff State Beach including parts of San Benito County. There are also reports of outages in Aromas.

Due to what PG&E is calling a “historic wind event” this weekend, Pacific Gas and Electric Company confirmed it will implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) affecting approximately 940,000 customers in portions of 36 counties across California.
Power will be shut off in six phases, including parts of Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties.
The times below are estimates and may change (earlier or later) dependent on weather.

A total of 9,987 customers will be affected in Monterey County, in the areas of Aromas, Greenfield, Gonzales, Salinas, and Soledad. 251 of those customers are medical baseline customers, meaning customers who have special energy needs due to qualifying medical conditions.
In San Benito County, a total of 1,369 customers will be affected in the areas of Hollister, Paicines, and San Juan Bautista. 39 of those are medical baseline customers.
44,942 customers will be affected in Santa Cruz county throughout Aptos, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Brookdale, Capitola, Corralitos, Davenport, Felton, Freedom, La Selva Beach, Mount Hermon, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Soquel, and Watsonville. 2,095 of those customers are medical baseline.

In order to prepare for the PSPS event, PG&E is asking customers to:
Update your contact information by calling 1-866-743-6589. PG&E will use this information to alert customers through automated calls, texts, and emails, when possible, before and during a Public Safety Power Shutoff.
Plan for medical needs like medications that require refrigeration or devices that need power.
Identify backup charging methods for phones and keep hard copies of emergency numbers.
Build or restock your emergency kit with flashlights, fresh batteries, first aid supplies and cash.
Keep in mind family members who are elderly, younger children and pets.

San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District announced that campuses will be closed on Monday, October 28 due to the power outages.

Affected customers with up-to-date contact information should receive a notification about a potential shutoff 48 hours before, again 24 hours before and then four hours before it begins.
