Overnight closure on Highway 1 at Rocky Creek begins July 22

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Caltrans announced that the next phase of emergency repairs on Highway 1 south of the Rocky Creek Bridge will start on Monday, July 22. This includes partial and full overnight closures, said Caltrans.

After the March 30 slipout in the area, Caltrans crews have been working to stabilize and reinforce Highway 1 as a result of loosing part of the southbound lane. They have opened 24/7 access for people traveling through the area by opening the northbound lane and implementing a temporary traffic signal.

Caltrans said that starting on July 22 through July 25, drivers passing through the area will encounter a partial overnight closure of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Delays can last up to an hour, they said.

Crews will be using these partial closures to reposition the existing K-rail and assign temporary striping to allow for construction in the southbound lane, according to Caltrans.

"Full overnight closures of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek will also be necessary intermittently for the remaining repair work and will be scheduled when equipment needs to be deployed across the entire roadway," said Caltrans. "Unlike the partial closures, no travel through the work zone will be permitted during the full overnight closures."

Here is a list of the scheduled full overnight closures:

  • Sunday, July 28 at 10 p.m. to Monday, July 29 at 6 a.m.
  • Monday, July 29 at 9 p.m. to Tuesday, July 30 at 6 a.m.
  • Tuesday, July 30 at 9 p.m. to Wednesday, July 31 at 6 a.m.
  • Wednesday, July 31 at 9 p.m. to Thursday, August 1 at 6 a.m.
  • Thursday, August 1 at 9 p.m. to Friday, August 2 at 6 a.m.

Caltrans said that there will be no overnight work on Friday or Saturday nights, and the total construction repairs for Rocky Creek are scheduled for summer 2025, depending on environmental conditions.
