MPUSD to decide on bond for schools in upcoming election
MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD) announced Tuesday that its Board of Trustees is considering adding a $340 million school improvement bond on the Nov. 2024 ballot.
MPUSD said that although its schools have been updated over the years, "many are still over 50 years old and in need of updates in areas such as safety, security, technology, classrooms, labs, art facilities, athletics and overall campus improvements."
If approved by local voters, the measure could expand services in career technical education like medicine, auto tech, construction trades and the culinary arts. It could also contribute to affordable and stable housing to help appeal to qualified teachers and staff. Additionally, the bond would upgrade science, technology, art, athletic and math classrooms, as well as schools' outdated roofs, plumbing, electrical and ventilation systems, according to the MPUSD. The district would also like to install solar panels.
MPUSD is asking for community feedback by filling out a survey.
