California Highway Patrol arrests 65-year-old Salinas man on felony hit-and-run charges
MONTEREY COUNTY, CALIF. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON MAY 22, 2024 AT 6:08 PM- The California Highway Patrol said a 65-year-old Salinas man was arrested after he allegedly from the scene of a deadly crash on Wednesday morning.
A CHP officer said in a press release that they were able to apprehended and arrested the driver of the white GMC Yukon involved in a deadly crash.
The driver was identified as 65-year-old Adolfo Rosales Diaz of Salinas.
The crash happened early Wednesday morning on Alisal Road just north of Hartnell Road. Officers said that Diaz was trying to pass a Nissan Altima that was heading southbound on Alisal Road.
The CHP said that the the Nissan tried to turn left into an agricultural field. Officers said that the GMC slowed down but hit the left rear of the Nissan.
The Nissan came to rest in a ditch just east of the roadway and the GMC ended up northbound in the Southbound lane.
Diaz was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail.
The CHP says it is still unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
Salinas woman dead in hit-and-run crash on Alisal Road, CHP says
The California Highway Patrol said that a 67-year-old Salinas woman died on Wednesday morning after she was involved in a two-vehicle crash just outside of Salinas.
A spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol told KION that the crash happened just after 6 a.m. on Alisal Road just north of Hartnell Road.
Officers said that a 68-year-old man was driving a Nissan Altima on Southbound Alisal Road and was waiting to turn into an agricultural field.
Investigators said that a white GMC Yukon was also driving southbound on Alisal Road and approaching the rear of the Nissan.
The CHP said that The GMC moved into the northbound lane and attempted to pass the Nissan.
At the same time, the Nissan initiated a left turn in front of the GMC which the GMC slowed down but hit the left rear of the Nissan, per officers
Investigators said The Nissan came to rest in a ditch just east of the roadway and the GMC ended up facing northbound in the southbound lane.
The 67-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Nissan died from her injuries at the scene while the 68-year-old man who was the driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital with major head injuries per CHP.
The victim has been identified by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office as 67-year-old Maria Elena Chavez de Chavez of Salinas.
According to investigators, the driver of the GMC Yukon drove from the scene before the California Highway Patrol arrived onto the scene. The driver of the GMC has not been identified.
It is unknown if alcohol or dugs were factors in the crash.

Monterey County CHP is investigating a vehicle accident that resulted in the death of one person Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred on Alisal Road just north of Hartnell Road. Investigators are still on scene learning what caused a vehicle to overturn into a ditch.
