City of Monterey asking for survey regarding traffic concerns on Highway 68 and Skyline Forest Drive

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV)- Two Monterey city councilmembers want a safer change to a busy intersection in Monterey. They say too many near-fatalities have happened on Skyline Forest Drive and Highway 68.

Councilmember Alan Haffa and Ed Smith are asking for a traffic study on the intersection on a future agenda.

The traffic study would be done by Caltrans.

From there, results from that study would show what appropriate measures need to be taken to make the road safer, whether it be traffic signals or other alternatives.

According to Caltrans, the traffic study would cost around $25,000.

"Public safety is the most important job of a city," said Haffa. "And, that intersection, anyone who's ever had to turn out of that intersection knows it's not a safe intersection,"

Haffa says people have brought up the safety concerns of the intersection to the city numerous times and are hoping to see a change.

During Tuesday night's meeting Councilmembers Smith and Haffa are going to ask for this to be on an agenda.

If at least three council members support the idea, it will be brought back by staff for a future agenda item.
