Nine people displaced after fire engulfs home in Pajaro

PAJARO, Calif. (KION-TV)- The North Monterey County Fire Department said that nine people have been displaced after a fire destroyed most of their home early Monday morning.

North Monterey County Fire said they received a report of a structure fire on 41 San Juan Road in Pajaro around 3:15 a.m.

According to firefighters, smoke and flames was seen in about 35 percent of the home when they arrived. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and stayed on scene for additional three hours.

Firefighters said that received mutual aid from Watsonville Fire.

North Monterey County Fire Chief Joel Mendoza told KION that a total of seven adults and two children were living at the home and have been displaced.

Mendoza said that the fire damaged a bedroom, kitchen and living room area.

The family told firefighters that the heater contributed to the fire but North County Fire says they are investigating the cause of the fire.

The family is currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

Mendoza said the house can be habitable again but the house will need extensive work.
