Gettin’ Sunny for the Holiday

Get ready for warmer, sunnier weather for the holiday weekend! High pressure will build back in from the southeast, putting the squash on the marine layer. Friday will be a transitional day with slow warming but some low cloudcover will remain present. Low level flow will become more northerly—a northwesterly onshore wind at the coast, but a dry northerly wind over the hills. This will actually increase this fire danger this weekend. Obviously, this weekend of all weekends will require vigilance! Some cooling expected next week.

Overnight
: Low clouds for the coast and inland valleys. Patchy fog & drizzle possible. Expect coastal lows in the low to mid-50s with mid-40s to low 50s inland.

*Beach  Hazards*
...for the immediate coast of Monterey & Santa Cruz Counties (and points northward and southward outside of our viewing area) from 3AM Friday through 8PM Sunday.

Hazards:
-Sneaker waves
-Strong rip currents
-Longshore currents
-Moderate shore break.

Sneaker waves can knock unsuspecting beach goers over and into the sea. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea.

Please check with your local authorities on potential beach closures. Steep beaches will have a higher risk of sneaker wave and rip current activity with greater wave run-up onto beaches.

A Beach Hazard Statement for sneaker waves means that conditions are present to support a heightened risk of unsuspecting beach goers being swept into the sea by a wave. Rip currents are typically more frequent and stronger in the vicinity of jetties, inlets, and piers. People walking along the beach should never turn their back to the sea. Fisherman should avoid fishing from rocks or jetties. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions. Anyone caught in a rip current should swim parallel to the coast to escape the rip current before trying to swim for shore.

Friday: Patchy low clouds on the coast—more so on the south/east sides of the bay—and sunny inland. Warmer, with coastal highs in the 60s to mid-70s and upper 70s to mid-90s inland. Breezy for inland valley in the afternoon.

Saturday (Independence Day): Mostly sunny with only a few low clouds on the coast. Warmer, with coastal highs in the mid-60s to upper 70s—warmest on the north side of the bay—and 80s to around 103ºF inland. Dry northerly winds will pick up over the hills late.

Extended: Sunday will be quite similar to Saturday, but onshore winds will strengthen late in the day, bringing a cooling breeze to coastal areas and eventually thicker low cloudcover. Expect more seasonable weather next week with coastal highs in the 60s-70s and 80s to low 90s inland along with partly cloudy skies on the coast and afternoon winds.
