March miracle? From bone dry to above average rain totals

Sequence 05.00_00_00_00.Still001

(KION) From the driest February on record for many, to above average rainfall in Monterey. We’ve seen quite the turnaround.

Was it a March Miracle? Rain has fallen on the Central Coast every weekend since the beginning of March.

January and February are typically our wet months on the Central Coast, but not this year.

Salinas, Monterey, and Carmel Valley all broke records for the driest February to date.

After all the rain we’ve seen recently, the southeast portion of the Monterey Bay is slightly above average for the season, with nearly 17 inches of rain at point pinos since October.

Brian Garcia with the National Weather service says, “We kinda got this miracle March, amazing April back to back.”

Now there is one caveat. That much rain at one time leads to water run-off, and less absorbed by the ground. But our storm window doesn’t look to be closed just yet. Some weather models are still showing more rain to come.

Rain water impacts everything from the water we drink to how extreme our fire season will be. While much of the Central Coast is still running a little behind on rainfall for the season, we’ve been blessed with several wet years. “It’s nothing to freak out about yet, we now have to see what next winter does,” says Garcia.
