Man charged with attempted murder of peace officer after standoff in Gilroy

GILROY, Calif. (KION-TV)- UPDATE ON MARCH 27, 2023 AT 11:12 AM: The Santa Clara Sheriff's Office has released details on an officer-involved shooting that ended with the arrest of a 35-year-old in an unincorporated part of Gilroy.

The altercation with the suspect Vincent Martinez began during a wellness check on the 3000 block of Dryden Avenue. Deputies said the suspect was outside the residence and when they tried communicating with him he fire multiple shots toward them and the surrounding neighborhood.

Deputies said they retreated to a safer location and awaited additional forces. The Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiations Team responded to the scene.

Deescalation was attempted but Martinez continued to fire on deputies and eventually hit a deputy with a bullet. Deputies returned fire but Martinez was not hit by any of the bullets. The deputy was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition, said the sheriff's office.

Deescalation was continued, but Martinez started a fire in the residence and exited while armed with a handgun, said deputies. He then tried entering an armored vehicle with law officials inside it.

A Campell Police Officer fired a round and hit Martines. First aid was provided to the suspect and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment, said deputies.

Martinez Will be arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail for the attempted murder of a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace office, and felon in possession of a loaded firearm, said deputies.

“I am very proud of all the deputies and law enforcement personnel from this incident," said Santa Clara Sheriff Robert Jonsen. "All deescalation measures were properly used in attempts to provide a safe outcome from this critical incident.”

UPDATE ON MARCH 26, 2023 AT 5:14 PM- A nine-hour standoff ended on Sunday evening as a gunman was shot by officers as he barricaded himself in a home on the 3000 block of Dryden Avenue at Bishop Court in an unincorporated area of Gilroy.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Russell Davis confirmed the information to our sister station KPIX.

Davis said that deputies responded to the 3000 block of Dryden Avenue around 8 a.m. on Sunday morning for a welfare check. Davis said that deputies had attempted to make contact with a 35-year-old male subject inside a residence.

When deputies attempted to make contact with the subject, they heard gunshots go off inside the residence. Davis said that deputies had backed away from the residence and took cover.

The Sheriff's Office's Emergency Response Team & Crisis Negotiations Team were called out to the scene.

Officers had tried to negotiate with the suspect. The suspect started shooting at officers. The suspect left the residence with a weapon in his possession and did try to enter an armored car with officers inside the vehicle.

The suspect was shot by an officer from a neighboring law enforcement agency at the scene. Davis said that during the exchange of gunfire that a Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputy was struck by a ricochet bullet and is listed in stable condition.

Davis said the suspect kept firing rounds of gunfire at deputies for multiple hours. Davis does not know if there was anybody inside the home with the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and there is no word on his condition. Once released from the hospital, the suspect will be booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on multiple charges which include attempted murder and assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon.

There was a shelter in place in the neighborhood but that has since been lifted.

Davis said that this is still an ongoing investigation but the crime scene has been secured as investigators are now gathering evidence at the residence.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is currently responding to a barricade situation in Gilroy.

Deputies said that the situation is taking place on the 3000 block of Dryden Avenue in an . The situation includes a suspect who has a weapon.

Shots have been fired at deputies and the Sheriff's Office's emergency response and crisis negotiation teams are at the scene and using all tactics for a peaceful resolution.

Deputies are advising people to stay out of the area. There are no injuries reported at this time.
