Son of man killed in Blanco Road crash files wrongful death claim seeks $50 million from City of Marina
MARINA, Calif. (KION-TV) UPDATE March 3, 2023, at 10:45 a.m.- The son of a man killed after a car crashed into a traffic light on Blanco Road and Research Drive, back in late August of 2022, is filing a wrongful death claim against the City of Marina.
The City received the claim on Feb. 27, 2023, and the claim is an agenda item listed for the Tuesday City Council Meeting. The son of Ronald James, one of four victims killed in the crash, is a minor being represented by KJ Injury & Accident Lawyers, PC in Los Angeles.
The claim states that Ronald Guy-James was a passenger in a vehicle that hit a traffic light, causing the car to ignite and kill all the occupants. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death for the four men.
The claim contests that dangerous conditions of public property, defective roadway design, negligent maintenance of public property and/or roadway, inadequate/defective traffic controls, and improper speed limit signs contributed to his father's death. The son is seeking $50,000,000 for the wrongful death claim.
According to the Marina City Council agenda, the staff recommends the council reject the claim made against teh city.
The City of Marina says that the "claims are procedurally rejected" and they have been sent to the legal department.
Four killed when moving truck hit power pole near Marina cause of death revealed
UPDATE Sept. 8, 2022, at 11:21 a.m.- The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has identified the four people who died after hitting a power pole near Marina in late August.
Thomas Marchionni, 68, the driver, and his three passengers Arturo Espinosa, 63, Mike Castillo, 57, and Ronald James, 60, were all in the moving truck that hit a pole off of Blanco Road. The moving truck hit the pole and burst into flames.
Deputies said blunt force trauma was the cause of death for everyone in the car. They were all allegedly volunteering and helping a woman move when they crashed.
Memorial planned for four killed when moving truck hit power pole near Marina
UPDATE Sept. 8, 2022, at 11:21 a.m.- A memorial is planned Saturday for the four people killed in late August when a moving truck hit a power pole outside of Marina.
Victims Ron, Art, Mike and Thomas will be honored by the organization Closer Walk with a memorial dinner at 4 p.m.
The group said all four men were homeless and got into the crash while trying to help a woman move. CHP has not identified the victims as of yet.

UPDATE Sept.1, 2022, at 11:21 a.m.- The California Highway Patrol said the four who died after their moving truck hit a power pole on Blanco Road near Marina Friday would not be identified for a while.
The bodies were so severely burned DNA evidence identification will take a month, said the Monterey County Coroners' Office.

Four people are dead after a moving truck hit a power pole on Blanco Road near Marina on Friday.
The crash happened around 3 p.m. on Friday along Blanco Road near Reservation Road and Research Drive. The truck traveling eastbound swerved and hit the power pole on Research Road for an unknown reason.
CHP said the four victims died when the vehcile burst into flames after colliding with the pole.
The CHP confirmed the fourth death to KION around 4:30 p.m.
CHP-Monterey is asking drivers to avoid the area as they try to clear the scene and investigate how this crash happened.
