Two people killed in Salinas in separate weekend vehicle vs. pedestrian incidents, according to police

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Salinas Police confirm a pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle while crossing the street along North Main near Rossi on Saturday night.

Police said it happened around 8:47 p.m.

Investigators said the driver of the first vehicle that hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene and indicated a second vehicle hit the man while he was laying on the road.

The victim of the crash along North Main Street is being identified by Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit  as 69-year-old Rickey Leneer Smith of Salinas.

Police said the driver is cooperating with the investigation at this time.

Salinas Police also confirmed another, separate fatal vehicle incident in Salinas over the weekend on the 300-block of Abbott Street. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Unit has identified the pedestrian as 72 year old Karen Budenholzer of Salinas.

Salinas Police is continuing to investigate the two incidents.
