Stabbing suspect pleads not guilty to attempted murder charge

CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A man accused of stabbing his mother on Saturday pleaded not guilty to attempted murder Wednesday.

William Lawrence Darpinian is accused of stabbing his mother in the Del Mesa Community on Carmel Valley Road around 10:17 a.m. on Saturday, January 25 according to deputies.

Dapinian had turned himself into the sheriff's office early Sunday morning.

Deputies said William Lawrence Darpinian approached a security guard station at the Del Mesa Community to contact deputies and turn himself in.

Suspect escapes after stabbing his mother; shelter-in-place lifted in Carmel Valley, says sheriff's office

The Monterey County Sheriff's office said it is searching for a stabbing suspect who prompted a shelter-in-place order for some residents of Carmel Valley. That order was lifted Saturday evening.

The sheriff's office said at 10:17 a.m. Saturday, it received a report that someone had been stabbed on the 200 block of Del Mesa within the Del Mesa community of Carmel Valley.

When deputies arrived, they found one victim who had been stabbed multiple times in their upper body. The sheriff's office confirmed to KION that the victim is the suspect's mother and that she is expected to survive after being taken to a trauma center for treatment.

The sheriff's office SWAT team, the crisis negotiation team and the bomb squad were called to search the home where the stabbing occurred, per the sheriff's office. After determining the suspect was not there, deputies located another home that appeared to have been broken into. However, the sheriff's office said deputies determined the suspect was not there either.

The suspect has been identified as 34-year old William Lawrence Darpinian of Carmel Valley. He's described as a white male adult, 5 foot 9 inches tall, and 150 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said Darpinian is considered to be armed and dangerous due to the nature of the crime being investigated; anyone who sees him is not to approach him and to dial 911 immediately.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office issued a shelter-in-place just before noon Saturday for some residents of Carmel Valley.

The sheriff's office said the order is in place until further notice for people near the Del Mesa community because of a stabbing incident that took placer earlier in the day. The victim was taken to a trauma center with unspecified injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

Members of the sheriff's office SWAT team and crisis negotiation team are currently involved in negotiations with a possible barricaded suspect in the Del Mesa area, per the sheriff's office.

A spokesperson described the suspect as a white adult male, 5 foot 8 inches, 150 lbs., with brown hair and black eyes. He is also described as being in his mid-thirties.

The sheriff's office is asking the community of Del Mesa to shelter in place; all others are asked to avoid the area.
