HOLLISTER, Calif. (KION) Lights, colorful drapes and safe socializing have transformed downtown Hollister.

"In May, we were only able to keep 50% of our staff," said La Catrina Mexican Grill Owner, Gustavo Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said the chance to operate outdoors has brought his business back to life. "Right now, 100% of our staff is working," said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez has been able to hire even more employees since the pandemic.

In May, the City of Hollister closed San Benito Street and allowed businesses to set up shop. The city is now revising the plan and finding ways to improve it.

"This is the survival of our downtown. If we can help them stay alive through this pandemic they will absolutely thrive once it is done," said Hollister Mayor, Ignacio Velazquez.

Velazquez said city council unanimously voted to reopen San Benito Street, but direct traffic one-way. Every business that applies for a permit with the city will be given a spot to set up along the curb.

"We're looking for something a little more permanent. We will let the traffic flow through in a safe manner and let more businesses come out," said Velazquez.

La Catrina Mexican Grill currently takes up a large part of San Benito Street and will have to scale back under the new plan. Gonzalez said he's adapted to change before and he'll do it again. "Of course, it's hard for everybody. At least we are open, have all our staff back and working," said Gonzalez.
