MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) The Monterey County Board of Supervisors are advocating for local hair salons and barber shops.

Personal care services were of the last businesses to reopen in Phase 3 and were shut down just weeks later.

Monterey County Supervisor, Chris Lopez, wrote a letter to the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. It recommends that stylists continue their work outdoors under pandemic circumstances.

Many other businesses have had success with offering services outside and are cleared to do so under the Governor Gavin Newsom's order.

"I have curtailed my own personal activities so I can remain open. It really does seem very unfair. I'm doing everything right, but because some people aren't, we as businesses are suffering from it," said Jeannie Frank-Bergquist, owner of The Hair Specialist in Pacific Grove.

Frank-Bergquist said the ocean breeze would make it extremely difficult for her to serve clients outside.

She said her current cosmetology license only applies inside her studio and that the board who have to make significant changes to allow stylists to bring business outdoors.
