Group in Monterey County to protest the shelter in place extension

"Poverty Kills," is the message that organizers David Henderson and Lawrence Samuels say they want their group to get across to the government.

A protest is set to take place from 1 p.m. -2 p.m. today at Window on the Bay in Monterey.

Henderson and Samuels say this was organized to bring attention to the rise in unemployment and other issues they say could come from extending the shelter in place order.

"If you don't have an economy, you don't have a health care system because you've got to have the money for it. Everything runs on money. You've got people that commit suicide, get on drugs, opioids, name it. Poverty kills," says Samuels.

They say they believe the government should "loosen restrictions" and allow people for themselves whether they want to reopen businesses or not.
