Work begins on sinkhole at Santa Cruz intersection

SINKHOLE STILL
KION546

Work on a sinkhole in Santa Cruz is supposed to start today, but heavy rain on the Central Coast this week could delay the project.

The intersection is located at Soquel Avenue and Ocean Street. Drivers should note that the right two lanes will be closed to drivers heading west on Soquel Avenue.

Sinkholes happen when water underground is circulating and begins to dissolve the rock down there. After a certain point, that rock gives out and the surface caves in.

The project should take a week or two to complete, with employees working weekdays between 8am and 5pm, according to the Santa Cruz Public Works Department.

The Public Works Department asks that drivers use alternate routes whenever possible.
