Six people remain missing during CZU Complex Fires

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (KION) - Fire crews continue to battle the CZU Complex Fires and as the fires grow in acreage in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties, there are still people who are unaccounted for.

The Santa Cruz Sheriff's Office says there are still 6 people missing. That's down one from yesterday, after 2 people were found and one more was reported missing.

There was also some grim news. A welfare check was done Tuesday for a 63-year-old woman who was last spoken to by a friend on Monday. That friend called officers who went to her home in Felton. That's when they found her body.

"We believe it's natural causes at this point - that caused her death, there was no signs of foul play, no signs of forced entry, anything that would give us any suspicion that anybody did anything to her," says Chief Deputy Chris Clark with the Santa Cruz Sheriff's Department.

So far, one person has died in the fire.

Meanwhile, the Santa Cruz Sheriff's Office is actively trying to find the other missing people and make sure they're okay.

It's also worth mentioning that last night no citations given… nor arrests made for people trying to sneak back into those evacuated zones in Santa Cruz County. The Sheriff's office says they are thankful that people are heeding their warning.
