SALINAS, Calif. (KION) UPDATE 2/7/2020 1:15 p.m. Salinas police said 19-year-old Fabian Moreno died as a result of a shooting.

At around 10:30 Thursday night, a 20-year-old driver flagged down police near East Alisal and Kings streets, saying his passenger, Moreno, had been shot. He was taken to Natividad where he died of his injuries.

"It's sad to see someone lose their live so early on when they have everything ahead of them. It makes you realize that life can be taken in an instant. You have to live life to fullest and be thankful for everything," said Cristian Delagadiloo, who lives close to where the shooting took place.

Police said the driver, Moreno and another 19-year-old male were parked near West and Archer streets when they were approached by at least one male suspect who pointed a gun at them and told them to get out.

Police said the three started to drive away and the suspect fired a gun at least once, hitting Moreno in the torso. The other two men in the car were not injured, but police said the windshield of the vehicle was also hit at least once. "I can't go into specifics about how many gunshots, but there was at least one," said Sergeant Danny Warner with the Salinas Police Department.

Police do not know if the shooting is gang related, but are continuing to investigate.

"We would like the community to come forward with any information that they may have. Even if they think it's very small and minuscule, to us, it may be the one piece of information that we need to solve this case," said Warner.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Byron Gansen at 831-758-7137 or byrong@ci.salinas.ca.us.
