TZ VO - NEW YEARS DAY HIKES.00_00_01_00.Still001

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION) The crowds came to Asilomar State Beach for an annual New Year's Day Hike.

The event is put on by California State Parks. Hikers were guided through two miles of rocky coastline and newly constructed boardwalk.

Hikers said the activity was the perfect start to 2020.

"We live locally and we could hear the waves, so we wanted to come down and check it out. We wanted to start the new year out with a little exercise," said hiker, Michael Waldo.

"I think this walk needs to be done many times in the coming year," said hiker, Carol Evans.

People participate in a similar hike at State Parks and Beaches across the country, every year, on New Year's Day.

The tradition was created to bring residents and visitors together, and encourage people to kick off the new year in a healthy way.
