Salinas fire crews fight structure fire on Via Maria

SALINAS, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 7/16/2021 11:58 p.m. A fire on Via Maria that damaged two homes started in a backyard near a shed, according to a deputy fire chief at the scene.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the deputy fire chief said it started near a shed and spread.

"A lot of these homes still here have wood shake roofs, and one of the homes involved in the back did have a wood shake roof that was easily ignited by the shed that was very close to the property line," said Deputy Fire Chief Sam Klemeck of the Salinas Fire Department. "We also have our afternoon Salinas breeze, so it's always a concern when we have fires in this area of town."

People were inside the homes when it started and called 911. No injuries were reported and everyone was able to evacuate safely.
