SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) The Santa Cruz Police Department is welcoming its newest officer, K-9 Arsen.

The department said Arsen is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois. Officer Alex Martin and Arsen have finished a 6-week training course and are now certified. They will specialize in finding hidden people and catching them.

"I have a partner who has loads of energy and is highly motivated to catch criminals, which makes my job easier," said Martin.

Arsen was previously a well-trained sport dog, and Martin is a 24-year veteran at the department. Martin spent ten years as a detective and worked on the SWAT team before becoming a K-9 handler.
