Local group voices opposition to defund the police

SPDRally

SALINAS, Calif. (KION)

Community members and retired law enforcement officers gathered outside the Salinas Police Department for a rally in support of local law enforcement.

The rally was proceeded by a caravan throughout the city of Salinas.

The rally was organized by a local Facebook group called MC Blue.

Organizer Lyle Skeen says he was inspired to create this movement by the recent Black Lives Matter protests calling for action to defund law enforcement that are happening all across the country.

"Here in Salinas, it would probably make the crime rise," says Skeen.

"We have a lot of gang problems and in the city of Salinas, we don't need that. We need more funding not less."

Salinas Officers stepped out to thank the group for their support.

Skeen says more rallies will be held, including the next one in Seaside on August 15th.
