Watsonville police receive nearly a half dozen reports of virtual kidnapping in a week

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION) The Watsonville Police Department said that within the last week, it has received nearly a half dozen reports of virtual kidnapping.

The virtual kidnapping scam happens when the scammers call a person and claim to have kidnapped one of their family members to get them to wire ransom money.

Police said the calls come from phone numbers in Mexico, and some people have lost thousands of dollars after being scammed.

Police say not to give any personal information or money to the callers, but call police instead.
