Monterey to discuss additional layoffs

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION)

The city of Monterey continues to feel the negative impacts of COVID-19.

Officials say they are expecting a 31 million dollar loss and now more cuts cuts and lay offs could be their next step.

The city attributes most of the loss to the decline in revenue from tourism, which makes up about 35% of the city's general fund.

More than 80 city employees are expected to lose their jobs in June.

City officials say this is temporary but add things are not looking too good.

They say they hope to avoid more lay offs but additional cuts to public safety and city services could still happen.

The city officials will discuss their proposals at a meeting later today.
