MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) The end to the shelter-in-place order has been pushed out to a later date. Monterey County officials announced, Friday, that May 3rd is the earliest people can expect to go back to work.

"It's the physical distancing that people are doing. It's taking this moment seriously. That is allowing me to make the statement that we have the capacity to meet the moment," said Governor Gavin Newsom.

The Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau predicts $400 to $500 million will be lost in three months. Officials said thousands of local employees in the industry have been laid off since mid-March.

"I had to bring in every employee and let them know. A lot of emotions are involved," said Portola Hotel and Spa Director of Rooms, Troy Reil.

The Monterey Peninsula-based union for hospitality workers, Unite Here, is trying to help out in every way they can. Director, Hector Azpilcueta, said 98% of their 1,500 members are out of work. "We're talking about housekeepers, servers, front desk staff, maintenance workers and dishwashers. All of them will be facing financial and economic difficulties," said Azpilcueta.

Unite Here is raising money to provide grocery cards, health insurance and emergency funds for members who are unemployed. Guidance on how to communicate with landlords who are expecting rent payments is offered to members, as well.

"We want to get resources to people in the greatest need. I hope the public continues to keep an eye out for their neighborhoods, family and stay safe," said Azpilcueta.
