SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION) Primary elections are over now, and Santa Cruz County officials are reminding residents that political yard signs cannot be put in blue recycling bins.

That is because most signs are made of several materials, ant that makes them incompatible with recycling operations.

The Recycling and Solid Waste Division of the county's Public Works Department has suggestions for reusing the signs:

  • Keep them to use in future election cycles if possible
  • Save and re-purpose them for yard sales, lemonade stands or birthday parties
  • Break them down and use them as smaller signs

Yard signs that cannot be reused must be put in the trash. More information about what can and cannot be put in the blue recycling bins can be found in the county's GreenWaste Recycling Guide.
