Salinas teen hit and killed on San Juan Grade identified by police

UPDATE 2/25/2020 11:30 a.m. The 14-year-old who died after being hit by a car Thursday night has been officially identified as Alex Martinez.

He was a freshman at Salinas High School, and police said counselors will be available for those having a hard time dealing with the loss.

Martinez died of his injuries Saturday while receiving treatment at a hospital. He was hit by a car as he ran across the street on the 100 block of San Juan Grade.

Police said the driver of the car is cooperating with the investigation.

UPDATE 2/23/20 8:00 p.m. The 14-year-old who was hit by a car Thursday night succumbed to his injuries Saturday, according to Salinas Police.

Police said the teen died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The teen was struck by a car as he ran across the street on the 100 block of San Juan Grade.

Police said the boy was sprinting across street toward an apartment building ahead of oncoming traffic. He sustained serious injuries as a result of the impact and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The investigation is ongoing.

A 14-year-old in Salinas was hit by a car as he was running across the street on the 100 block of San Juan Grade late Thursday.

Salinas police say at around 10:19 p.m. the teen apparently got out of a parked car along the side of the road and ran towards apartment buildings ahead of oncoming traffic.

A car hit the teen, who was seriously injured from the impact. He was transported to the hospital.

Police say the driver of the car is cooperating with the investigation and at this point DUI is not being suspected.
