POLICE: Suspect in Santa Cruz shooting remains at large

10 11PM LLPKG - SC SHOOTING WEST CLIFF DRIVE.00_00_03_28.Still001

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) Leftover tape from the scene of an early morning shooting is still partially in tact along West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, Saturday.

"It's kind of scary. It makes me wonder what's going on. The gun thing is so outrageous and insane,” said nearby resident, Christo Siddhartha.

Santa Cruz Police said just after 2 a.m. two men began shooting at one another along the 100 Block of West Cliff Drive. A 26-year-old man was left on the street after having suffered multiple gun shot wounds.

"I'm just kind of bummed out. I don't feel like there is anything I can do about it,” said nearby resident, Danyelle Ferretti.

Police said officers kept the victim alive while waiting for an ambulance and the Santa Cruz Fire Department to arrive on scene. The victim was transported to a trauma center where, police said, he is in stable condition.

"We have some information that we are currently following up on. We've already collected evidence to make sure we get everything we possibly can. We already recovered a firearm,” said Santa Cruz Chief of Police, Andrew Mills.

Police said California Highway Patrol officers assisted in an immediate search for the suspect after the shooting. Police also added that the suspect’s motive and the pair's relationship is still unknown.

“We will process everything, track down suspects, and figure out what took place here,” said Mills.

Feretti said Saturday morning’s shooting, unfortunately, does not come as a surprise. "Six years ago our house had three bullets shot into it, from the other side of the fence, off of Mission Street. One of them went into our shower. One of them went into our little fire burner, outside,” said Feretti.

As a mom of a new baby, Feretti said the crime has to stop. "It sucks because the west side is supposed to be a pretty safe part of town. Things continue to happen over here. It's just sad,” said Feretti.
