BIG SUR, Calif. (KION) The California Highway Patrol responded to an accident on Highway 1 near Hurricane Point in Big Sur Wednesday.

Officers said a vehicle drove off the side of a cliff sometime Tuesday night.

"From what I can tell the vehicle is traveling northbound on Highway 1. It appears it left the roadway, overcorrected, left the west side of the highway, at which point it overturned as it traveled down an embankment and came to rest on its side,” said Officer John Yerace with the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle was towed from the cliffside Wednesday afternoon.

Yerace said the female driver was not injured. He said the driver was able to call for help after the crash.

"We got a report from an individual who claimed he was the driver's husband. He said that she was not injured and at home. We hope to make contact with her shortly,” said Yerace.

Yerace said the accident could have ended much worse. "If she is not injured, I would attest probably a large portion to that due to the fact that she was wearing her seatbelt,” said Yerace.

The California Highway Patrol is warning all drivers to slow down on Highway 1 in Big Sur, especially during the night.
