Santa Clarita hospital gives update on condition of teen shooting victims

UPDATE 11/14/2019 4:30 p.m. A Santa Clarita hospital where several victims of a school shooting were treated has issued an update on their condition.

Four students were taken to that hospital with injuries. A 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy died of their injuries. One person is still in critical condition and another was discharged.

There were a total of seven people injured- six as a result of the shooting and the other was not shot. One person was transported by helicopter and the rest by ground to three different hospitals.

Officials also took the opportunity to thank three off-duty officers who were close to the school and were the first to respond to the shooting. They got to the scene within seconds, and a minute later, uniformed officers arrived.

Law enforcement is interviewing victims and witnesses, and they served a search warrant at what they believe is the suspect's home.

There were reports of an Instagram post from an account that officials believe belonged to the suspect that said students should have fun at school today, but it was taken down, so law enforcement believes someone else has access to the account.

Officials said they do not know the motive for the shooting or any connection between the suspect and victims except that they were all students. They do not believe there are co-conspirators or that it was connected to any ideology or group.

Saugus High School and the rest of the district will be closed Friday, but other districts will stay open.

UPDATE 11/14/2019 2:50 p.m. CBS news has confirmed the identity of the suspect in a shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita.

His name is Nathaniel Berhow, and today is his 16th birthday. Officials said that he shot himself in the head and is in grave condition.

Two students are confirmed dead- a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, but a total of at least six people were shot, including the suspect.

UPDATE 11/14/2019 12:00 P.M. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said a 14-year-old male student has died after a shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita.

This death brings the number up to two. A 16-year-old girl died earlier in the morning.

There was a total of six people shot, including the 16-year-old male suspect. The Sheriff's Office said the suspected shooter shot himself in the head and is in grave condition.

Two girls, ages 14 and 15, along with a 14-year-old boy were wounded. At least two of the victims were in critical condition at the hospital.

UPDATE 11/14/2019 10:10 a.m. A hospital confirms that a female has died of her injuries after a shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita. A suspect is in custody and being treated at a hospital.

At least three more male victims are being treated at the hospital. Two of them are in critical condition and one is in good condition.

Law enforcement said the suspect is described as an Asian male in black clothes. They said he is a 16-year-old student at the school. He is being treated at a hospital.

Saugus High was on lockdown. Classes had not gotten underway when the shooting occurred, so the campus was not completely full. William S. Hart Union High School was also on lockdown. 

UPDATE 11/14/2019 10:00 a.m. A suspect has been caught after a shooting that injured at least five people at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita.

According to the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, a hospital there said it was treating four patients- three males and a female. It said three of the patients were in critical condition and one was in good condition.

Law enforcement said the suspect is described as an Asian male in black clothes, and it is not clear if he is a student. He is being treated at a hospital.

Saugus High was on lockdown. Classes had not gotten underway when the shooting occurred, so the campus was not completely full. William S. Hart Union High School was also on lockdown. 

PREVIOUS STORY: At least seven people have been injured in a shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita Thursday morning. The suspect remains at large.

The shooting occurred before 7:45 a.m. in the area of the school, which is located at 21900 Centurion Way.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department told the Los Angeles CBS affiliate that at least seven people were being treated for various injuries. It’s unclear how many of those people had been shot. There was one victim who was found wounded in the school choir room.

Authorities were searching for a male Asian suspect in black clothing, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department reports. The suspect was still at large as of 8 a.m.

Saugus High was on lockdown. Classes had not gotten underway when the shooting occurred, so the campus was not completely full. William S. Hart Union High School was also on lockdown. 

No further details on the incident were confirmed.
