National Weather Service warns of sneaker wave risk Thursday and Friday
The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazard Statement for the Monterey Bay and Big Sur coast because there is a higher risk of sneaker waves toward the end of the week.
The hazard goes into effect Thursday afternoon and extends through Friday afternoon.
The NWS expects there will be larger waves that could wash over jetties and rock outcroppings, and steep beaches are at a higher risk of sneaker waves on beaches.
People walking near the beach are asked not to turn their back to the sea and fisherman are asked to avoid rocks and jetties because of the risk of being swept out.
