Twenty-three people arrested, 59 cited during Santa Cruz Halloween event

Thursday night was the city of Santa Cruz’s annual Halloween celebration, and police said the number of arrests and citations during the event was up from last year.

In total, Santa Cruz police said it received more than 200 calls for service between 5 p.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. on Friday. Over the course of the night, police said they arrested 23 people- 19 for public intoxication, two for DUI, one for battery and one for felony possession of a billy club. Police said everyone arrested was an adult, but the number of arrests was up from 17 last year.

Officers also issued 59 citations throughout the night. They said 44 of them were for Triple Fine violations, and most of those were for open alcohol containers. Last year, officers issued 57 citations and 36 of them were for Triple Fine violations.

During the event that brought out a crowd of 8,000 to 10,000 people, 100 members of law enforcement patrolled the downtown area. They said hundreds of families enjoyed a trick-or-treating event and there were no significant acts of violence.

Santa Cruz police also thanked the agencies that helped them, including Capitola police, Watsonville police, UCSC police, the CHP, Santa Cruz County Probation, State Parole, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, State Parks, the Santa Cruz County Gang Task Force and Alcohol Beverage Control.
