Police looking for suspect in Watsonville church vandalism

Watsonville police are asking for help identifying a suspect in a church vandalism.

Surveillance video from Tuesday afternoon shows a man walking toward the front doors of St. Patrick’s Church with what appears to be a spray paint can, and about 15 seconds later he walks away.

An employee later reported the man to police and said there was a derogatory Spanish word spray-painted on the front doors. Officers searched the area, but could not find the suspect.

This is not the first time this particular church has been vandalized. Six weeks ago, a man was caught on camera apparently throwing a rock at one of the church’s windows.

Police believe the same person was responsible for both instances and hope that somebody will recognize the man in the video.

The suspect could face felony vandalism charges, but it does not meet the requirements of a hate crime.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Tyler Wildey at 831-768-3356.
