Sheriff’s Office: ‘Suspicious circumstances’ surrounding body found near Big Sur Bakery

UPDATE 10/7/19 11:23 p.m.: The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said the death is suspicious and that the person did not appear to die of natural causes.

“We’re treating it as a homicide investigation, unless evidence comes forward to show that it was otherwise,” Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Captain John Thornburg said.

Big Sur locals, like Brenton Henderson, were surprised to hear news of the body’s discovery.

“It’s totally wild that there was someone found in this area,” Henderson said.

Locals had a lot of questions and few answers about the case Monday night.

“It seems like a pretty tight-knit community here and so for us to find out how this happened is really important to us,” said Thomas Crowder who works in Big Sur.

A state park ranger made the gruesome discovery Saturday morning.

Now, investigators are trying to piece together what happened.

“This person died some other way, don’t know exactly how yet,” said Thornburg. “We are working on identifying who, what, when and where, as far as what went on with this situation. When was this person there? Who were they with? Where might those people be now?”

The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing any suspect descriptions and doesn’t know how many people they’re looking for yet.

Deputies know the identity of the person found, but are not releasing it at this time, until his family is notified.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday where detectives will likely find out more information about what happened.
