Groups around California petition to recall Gov. Newsom

Gage Skidmore

Several groups around the state are beginning to petition to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom.

One of the organizations petitioning for his recall is Restoring America Now. According to the organization’s website, it was started in early 2019 by Erin Cruz. It also lists her reasoning for starting the organization.

Cruz started it, “… to help with the humanitarian issues we face as states and as a nation, rising homelessness, our veterans with so many needs, election integrity issues, she couldn’t stand by and do nothing,” the website said.

According to the Recall Newsom website, a San Diego physician is also behind the recall. Californians to Recall Gavin Newsom claims Dr. James Veltmeyer is the chairman of its committee. Recall Newsom writes that health care for undocumented immigrants, tax increases, homelessness, sanctuary cities and California’s status as a sanctuary state are the reasons why the creators believe Newsom should be recalled.

Another petition is circulating on change.org. It was started by Joshua Lindsay, and Lindsay gave several reasons for starting the petition. Some of them include Newsom’s decisions to pull troops off the southern border, give undocumented immigrants taxpayer-funded goods and services and back policies that Lindsay said have increased the prison population.

“Californians did not vote for Sanctuary Cities, or for California to feud with President Trump to bring in illegal immigrants to replace Californian citizens,” Lindsay wrote.

There are also Facebook groups created to support the recall effort, including some here on the Central Coast.

To recall a governor, proponents must complete several steps that include publishing or posting a notice of intention to circulate a recall petition, preparing the petition in the format required by the secretary of state, circulating the petition and filing it. From there, county elections officials will determine the number of qualified voters who have signed the petition, and the secretary of state will determine if enough registered voters signed to initiate a recall election.

Newsom won the race for California governor with 61.9% of the vote in November 2018.
