Central Coast Honduran man speaks about migration caravan

A caravan carrying thousands of Central American migrants reached the Mexico-Guatemala border and is inching closer to the U.S.

The group of mostly Honduran men, women and children though is not being welcomed by the President.

President Trump’s says he won’t allow the caravan to enter the U.S.

For one Central Coast man, the mass migration is a painful reminder of the journey his family took from Central America.

Twenty- year old Carlos Rene Castro is a local photographer and a student.

He immigrated from Honduras when he was 5 -years old and has already gone on to great success here in the States. Still, Castro says the plight of these immigrants comes as no surprise.

“It’s unfortunate that this has to happen but life happens and people have to do what they have to do,” he said.

Fifteen years before Friday’s migrant caravan left Central America, Castro left Honduras to come to the U.S.

A hurricane devastated the country and wiped out his family’s furniture store business.

“My dad made the move first. He left Honduras when I was one year old, he came to the United States first and came here before us so he could get a stable job and have some income for us,” Castro said, “So then we made the move my mom and I we came to the United States when I was five years old then ever since I’ve been here in Salinas.”

We first met Carlos in August when he opened his first photo exhibition showcasing the community that he says brought him so much.

“The opportunities have been endless for us we’ve you know been grateful for being in the position that we are now,” he said.

As for the caravan, Carlos says he understands their efforts.

“Obviously there’s a lot of corruption going on back in our country and, you know, you can’t live in that way you can’t live in poverty,” Castro said, “You have to make decisions that are tough and these people who are making the decisions that are tough and these people who are making the decisions, I tip my cap to them.”

President Trump said the caravan would allow criminals into the country and blamed democrats for an “Open border”.

The President added that he is willing to call the military to protect the border.
