Cousins fatally shot in Salinas at memorial service ID’d

UPDATE: 1/29/2018 2:39 p.m. Two cousins who were shot and killed in Salinas Saturday night have been identified as 38-year-old Anthony Gomez and Yvonne Flores.

The two victims were shot and killed while at a memorial for a family member at a home on the 1100 block of Granada Avenue.

“There were several people assembled in the garage when two male suspects approached the residence from the street. For unknown reasons, they both fired several rounds into the area of the garage, striking the two victims,” said Salinas PD.

Gomez died at the scene. Flores died while undergoing surgery at Natividad Medical Center. Both Gomez and Flores were from Salinas.

Two cousins were shot and killed in Salinas Saturday night. Family members tell KION they were at a memorial for a family member that had passed away from a heart attack when shots rang out.

Salinas Police were called to the Granada Avenue home on Saturday night around 8 o’clock.

Police found two people, a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Family members say they were two cousins in their late thirties.

They also tell KION the family was in the garage with the door open when two suspects came up to the house and began shooting. One man who was inside the house says he heard as many as 14 gunshots.

The man died at the scene. The woman was taken to Natividad Medical Center where she later died in surgery, according to the Salinas Police Department.

Police and family members say the two suspects ran towards Rosarita Drive where they may have gotten into a car.

Family members say they do not know why they would be targeted.

This is the second and third homicides in the City of Salinas in 2018.

ShotSpotter alerts and several phone calls led Salinas police to a home on Granada Avenue Saturday night, where officers found a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

The man died at the scene. The woman was taken to Natividad Medical Center where she later died in surgery, according to the Salinas Police Department.

The two victims were cousins, police say. They were at a get-together on the 1100 block of Granada Avenue when the shooting happened at 7:30 p.m.

“There were several people assembled in the garage when one or two male suspects approached the residence from the street. For unknown reasons, they both fired several rounds into the area of the garage, striking the two victims,” according to the press release issued Sunday morning.

The suspects ran off toward Rosarita Drive and may have got into a vehicle, police say.

The names of the victims are being withheld until family members can be notified.

The Salinas Police Department says its investigating the double homicide as gang related.

This is the second and third homicides in the City of Salinas in 2018.
