Fireworks will be on sale in Salinas starting Wednesday
In 2015 the Salinas City Council voted to ban fireworks, that decision was overturned by voters last year, which bring us to now. Firework stands are back, 18 of them to be exact and non-profits are getting ready to sell lots of fireworks beginning Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. The sale of fireworks paired with long dried out grass from the wet winter is expected to make for a very busy holiday.
“We plan for the worst and hope for the best. You would think after the rain we would be good to go. The opposite is true. We have experience tall grass crops, light fuels and things that burn readily so we’re very concerned about that,” said Salinas Battalion Chief and Fire Marshall Sam Klemek.
Salinas police and fire are prepared for a flood of calls. A big part of what they will respond to comes from community tips. If you go to www.salinasfireworks.com you can email, send text messages, voicemails, and also upload pictures of illegal firework use. Fines for illegal fireworks can run from $1,000 on up.
