UPDATE: Memorial for Sand City homicide victim grows
UPDATE 3/16/2015: Monday afternoon, investigators with Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team said the victim in Sunday’s shooting on Highway 1 in Sand City was Khaleel Johnson, 19, of Seaside.
They believe this shooting is gang related and PRVNT will assist the Sand City Police Department with the investigation.
PREVIOUS STORY: The Sand City Police Department along with the Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team, are investigating a shooting that left one man dead and a second man in critical condition Sunday morning in Sand City, police said.
The Sand City Police Department said the shooting happened 12:30 a.m. when two men in a vehicle were shot at while driving northbound on Highway 1.
Police said the driver of the vehicle was able to take the Fremont Boulevard exit and drove into the parking lot of a Valero Gas Station on the 2100 block of California Avenue.
The victim was taken to Natividad Medical Center and is in critical condition, police said. The second victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Before 10 a.m. Sunday, officers were out at the scene for further investigation. Police said officers closed the off-ramp at Fremont Boulevard snarling traffic.
