American flag stolen from Morgan Hill neighborhood, WWII veteran explains
In Morgan Hill, an American flag that’s become part of one local community is missing and was apparently stolen. No one is more upset than a World War II veteran, known around the Jackson Meadows neighborhood for taking care of it.
Residents in the neighborhood are very patriotic with flags hanging outside their homes. WWII veteran Frank said he doesn’t know why someone would take the flag.
“I don’t know why they took that flag,” said Frank, who only wanted to be identified by his first name.
Frank has been a Morgan Hill resident for more than 35 years. He’s been maintaining the neighborhood flag for more than ten years. He said during the holidays, he goes around the neighborhood putting little American flags on everyone’s mailboxes.
Frank said he used to maintain the neighborhood American flag which was a labor of love. But because of health concerns, he passed the torch to his neighbor Stephen Dunne, until the flag disappeared.
This most recent incident wasn’t the first time the flag had been taken. Frank said the same thing happened about five years ago. But he quickly replaced the flag and pole so neighbors wouldn’t panic.
Dunne said he heard about the missing flag in his neighborhood and posted about it on the city’s neighborhood watch Facebook page. He hopes the city will catch the thief.
“The flag is a symbol of our freedom in this country. Americans have been fighting for this flag since the Revolutionary War,” Dunne said.
Dunne said the flag normally flies above a neighborhood sign. Neighbors have plans to replace it as soon as they can.
“We fight for our flag, and it’s very important. I hate to see these people who destroy the American flag,” Frank said.
Dunne said he plans to make a police report about the missing flag.
