Humpback whale washes ashore at Sunset State Beach

A humpback whale washed ashore Friday morning at Sunset State Beach in Watsonville, according to California State Parks.

Officers said a woman who lives nearby, saw the whale off-shore Thursday and found it in the surf near Sunset Beach Road off of San Andreas.

Later in the day, officers said lifeguards confirmed it was likely dead and floated to shore.

Long Marine Lab biologists will be out there this afternoon to do a necropsy on the animal right there on the beach.
