Car crashes into power pole, catches fire in Prunedale area

California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a single car accident as a hit and run.

Around 2:30 p.m. Monday, a green Mustang went off the roadway and collided with a power pole on Blackie Road in the Prunedale area.

As that pole fell, line tension caused another pole to fall and live power lines landed in dry grass field.

Witnesses reported seeing three people flee from the scene of the accident.

The grass caught fire, and approximately four acres were burned. No residential structures were damaged. North Monterey County fire crews responded, with assistance from multiple neighboring agencies.

Crews were able to get the fire controlled in about an hour, but they’re expected to remain on scene for another couple hours as they finish mopping up. As of 3:30 p.m., Blackie Road was closed in both directions for about a half-mile.

PG&E officials said that approximately 700 customers lost power when accident occurred. Crews from the utility company are on scene. Power is being restored to most customers, but several homes may not have power until Tuesday morning.
