Panetta delivers keynote at Monterey County Reads recognition ceremony

A special celebration will held Friday at the Monterey Peninsula College’s Marina Education Center to recognize 180 volunteers who participated in Monterey County Reads.

These volunteers will be recognized for their dedication in helping children achieve grade level literacy skills. The 40 elementary schools who participate in the program also will be honored.

Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, chairman of the Panetta Institute, will deliver the keynote address at the ceremony, scheduled for 4:30 to 6 p.m.

“We can either become a country in renaissance, or we can become a country in decline,” Panetta said in a release for the event. “If our nation and our democracy are going to thrive it is essential that we give our children the vital skill of literacy. The volunteers and schools that will be recognized at this event are helping secure the success of our nation for this and future generations.”

Monterey County Reads, now in its 18th year, brings volunteers from throughout the community to go through literacy training and then work one-on-one with elementary school students.
