Two energy bill assistance programs open to Monterey, Santa Cruz County residents

CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION) The Central Coast Energy Services is offering two programs to help low-income households in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties pay their energy bills.

The two programs are the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) and the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE).

HEAP helps households to pay home energy bills by allowing them make one payment of varying amounts one time per calendar year. The amount that participants pay depends on income, household size and funding.

Customers who have received a 15-day or 48-hour notice may get immediate help at emergency service sites.

To be eligible for HEAP, CCES says customers must have a monthly income in the last 30 days that does not exceed:

  • 1 Person- $2,004
  • 2 Person- $2,621
  • 3 Person- $3,238
  • 4 Person- $3,855
  • 5 Person- $4,472
  • 6 Person- $5,089
  • 7 Person- $5,204
  • 8 Person- $5,320

Another program is CARE, a discount rate program offered by PG&E. This program allows eligible households to get a 20% discount on their energy bill.

To be eligible for CARE, CCES says customers must have an annual income over the past 12 months that does not exceed:

  • 1-2 Person: $31,460
  • 3 Person: $39,580
  • 4 Person: $47,700
  • 5 Person: $55,820
  • 6 Person: $63,940
  • 7 Person: $72,060
  • 8 Person: $80,180
